Metro launches tablet edition using Roxen technology

Metro, the world’s largest international newspaper, is soon launching its tablet edition using Roxen technology for mobile devices. Metro is targeting a young, urban audience and has over 17 million daily readers of its 100 free editions throughout four continents. The new software from Roxen allows Metro to seamlessly integrate its online content to reach readers using Apple iPad.

”Our requirements for a tablet software were challenging from a technical as well as a commercial perspective”, says Peter Holmlund, Executive Vice President and Online Director for Metro International. “We wanted an innovative tablet app for the iPad, offering our readers an even better look-and-feel and user experience than our regular online editions. Something future-proof while at the same time using native device functionality such as rubber band, swiping, off-line reading and other functionality nowadays expected by iPad users. Social media interaction and user comments were essential and, for ease of use and visibility, it was to be made available in App store”, Mr. Holmlund explains. “The solution should, however, not require any additional editorial headcount and it should not incur any cost for third party software or additional variable cost for downloads. In a nutshell, a cost-efficient, scalable and thoroughly delightful experience for our metropolitan target audience."

Roxen’s new publishing software for tablets and smartphones combines template-driven, automated publishing with a hybrid-app using HTML5. It supports both iPad and iPhone and will be launched also on additional platforms including Android shortly. The new software can be integrated with any editorial or other content management system on the market. It is also included in Roxen Editorial Portal, a web-based editorial system for multichannel publishing provided to a number of newspapers throughout Europe and North America.

”Metro is a demanding customer in the forefront of the global media industry. We are proud to be asked again to contribute to strengthening their presence in new channels. This project is yet another example of Roxen’s dedication to taking cost and complexity out of the editorial process using the latest technology and open standards”, says Per Östlund, CEO of Roxen.
